Tell us about yourself, and what you’re currently up to.
I’ve just finished up my first year of college at the University of Maryland — Go Terps! I’m from Frederick, Maryland, although I spent most of my childhood living in Minnesota and Delaware. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Government and Politics, focusing on the analytical side of political science. I also am working towards a minor in Sustainability Studies.
What are some of your favorite courses so far, and how have they impacted what you want to do in the future?
One of my favorite courses ever was Political Philosophy. My professor, Dr. Kumar, was very thoughtful and approached teaching very complex topics such as morality and social justice from multiple different perspectives. This class affirmed my preexisting passion for political science and taught me that every issue in society is much more complex than it may seem. I will actually be working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for this class in the fall as well!
Outside of your coursework, what are some of the things you are involved with on campus?
On campus, I am the president-elect of the University Honors (UH) Student Life Council, where we plan events to bring the community of UH students at UMD together. I also am one of the membership chairs of Phi Alpha Delta, a professional fraternity for students interested in going into the legal profession. Plus, I just ended my term as the Parliamentarian of UMD’s Student Government Association (SGA). Plus, I co-host a weekly radio show on WMUC 90.5 College Park with my friend Rory called “Aux Privilege Revoked.”
How has receiving a scholarship from the Emergent Scholars program impacted you, and your studies?
Receiving a scholarship from the Emergent Scholars Program has greatly helped me to pursue my dream of pursuing higher education with little to no debt. This will also assist me in my future goal of attending law school, which can be very pricey.
What are some of the things you like to do for fun?
I have loved to play soccer competitively since a very young age, and have played on intramural teams for both soccer, as well as volleyball, in college. I also love to meditate at least once a day, it makes me feel more energetic and motivated to put my best foot forward in everything I do.
Congratulations on all your accomplishments, Mason! We look forward to hearing about your continued success, and the impact you’ll make in the future.
